UPDATE: KC NARI Service Project
NARI Gives Back
KC NARI Volunteers Finish Wheelchair-Accessible Bathroom
In June 2020, Kansas City NARI volunteers began an important project for a local family in partnership with Kansas City Heroes. Kansas City Heroes is a nonprofit that helps people with disabilities, senior citizens, the houseless, veterans, and single-parent homes by providing acts of kindness. (Read how the project started in this blog post.)
The indoor portion of the project was sidelined due to COVID safety concerns, but in July 2021 the long-awaited bathroom remodel was completed by NARI volunteers!
The service project focused on a wheelchair accessible bathroom for Tom & Charlotte Rhodes and their son Michael. Tom is a Navy veteran and served in Vietnam. Charlotte was recently successful in her second battle with cancer, and their grown son, Michael, is wheelchair bound. Their home in Kansas City, Kansas needed a major bathroom remodel (their only bathroom for 3 adults) to make it accessible for Michael and his wheelchair.
Wendall Gartman, Gartman Remodeling, agreed to be the project manager for the remodel. Due to the size of the bathroom and ongoing COVID safety concerns, KC NARI limited the number of people working on the project. Instead KC NARI collected donations to assist a small group with labor and materials for the project.
The Finished Project
The Rhodes family finally has an accessible bathroom for their grown son, Michael, who has been wheelchair-bound his entire life.

Thanks & Praise
More than 50 Kansas City NARI members contributed labor, materials and nearly $12,000 in cash donations to make this community service project happen. We were able to present the family with $3,000 in VISA gift cards so they could enhance the bathroom remodel…or any other part of their house! NARI members love to give back to the community in which they live and work despite being crazy busy with staff shortages and material delays. KC NARI members ROCK!
A special thanks to Joni Smith, Great American Building Materials, 2019 Chapter President, and Judy Transue, CR, CRPM, UDCP, CHC Design-Build, 2021 Chair of the Board, for working together to organize this community service project.
